Rolook (Romario Lukau)

Congolese, b. 1994
Lives and works in Kinshasa, DRC
A graduate of Kinshasa’s Académie des Beaux–Arts, Rolook draws on images of traditional African practices of body art and scarification to raise awareness of the many challenges facing society today. Through his works, he seeks to raise awareness and provide insight into the world in which he lives. This series of three works pays tribute to the brave young men and women who persevere and resist in the face of the challenges of contemporary society. These individuals reflect the strength that resides within us. The yellow background, a striking contrast with the black color of the subjects, provides the viewer with a sense of optimism.
