Lives and works in Kinshasa, DRC

Self-taught Congolese artist Fiston Maketa’s works portray subjects and scenes of everyday life in the Congo in a playful and joyful manner.  His works are deeply positive, as can be seen in the expressions of his subjects and his rich use of color. His works mix the real and the imaginary, combining fictional subjects and characters drawn from real life.  The artist often includes himself as well as family members and friends within his paintings, such as the detailed works found within the primary subject’s eye-glasses.
